AFTER THE JUMP FEST 2008

Every year, NYC's music blogger coalition After the Jump calls on all of its resources to put together a giant music festival on the first day of summer. This year, The Musebox was proud to promote and be a part of After the Jump Fest 2008.

This year's festival turned out to be tremendous success, an amazing day filled with music, free ice cream, and fun in the sun. Referred to by Brooklyn Radio as a “proverbial spice cabinet,” After the Jump Fest 2008, the effort 20 New York City music bloggers to help new bands gain exposure, featured a multitude of bands at their best. Among the performers were Health, Titus Andronicus, and The Musebox’s own Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears.

After the Jump Fest 2008 was able to raise more than $3,000 for Donors Choose and Education Through Music, charities that provide New York City schools with funding and programming.

Spin Magazine
"After the Jump Fest Invades Brooklyn: Pela, the Forms, Ponytail, and many more hit the streets on summer's boiling solstice and stir a welcomed commotion."

Brooklyn Radio
"At the end of the night, I felt like I had seen 16 different shows in one day, but somehow they all possessed a certain cohesion that I can't explain. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life, and After the Jump Fest was the proverbial spice cabinet."

Baeble Music
"All in all the festival was a fantastic success; a multitude of bands got exposure, and tons of fans came out to enjoy music on the streets and inside MHOW"

Metromix.com
Check out their ATJ photo gallery of bands and fans mingling in the crowd.

Tokyo Police Club - #1 most blogged about band!

It's time to break out the champagne, as Tokyo Police Club just hit #1 on elbo.ws blog charts! These guys have definitely found the magical formula for sparking blog attention, releasing new songs, videos, remixes, and more just about every week! As our friends over at Stereogum put it best in their recent post,
"TPC are masterminding the duration of their blog buzz in powerful ways so take notes, young bands. Start with a remarkable EP. Follow that with another. Then put out a video for practically every track, including one that predicts the apocalypse is coming next year. Record a fairly enjoyable debut album. Make sure to give away a free MP3. Use big words. Release a "remix one week, chase that with a proper video the next. Umm, duh?"

Check out all the new goodies below!

Tokyo Police Club Grabs #2 Spot On Elbo.ws

So, our wayyyy nerdy online department here at The MuseBox (Bryan) has been really ecstatic today. The reason: Tokyo Police Club reached #2 on the Elbo.ws chart. What does this mean, you might ask? Basically, Elbo.ws tracks what music blogs are posting about. This week Tokyo Police Club is the second most posted about band (behind the totally awesome My Morning Jacket).

Check out Elbo.ws and be sure to grab Tokyo Police Club's new album Elephant Shell. It's what everybody is blogging about!

While Pink Skull is just deejaying, and not doing one of their energetic live performances, the band's diverse influences, numerous side projects, and recent remixes should provide the makings of a good set." - Brooklyn Vegan

Oh, and let's not forget myopenbar.com:

Pink Skull played a Myopenbar/Finger on the Pulse party at Glasslands a few months ago. Now they're headlining a gig (DJ set only) for music marketing company the Musebox. Expect: bullshit giveaways (clothes and condoms), free booze, and DJ sets by James F!@$%^ Friedman and Johnny Cocco.

As I spent an hour in the Greenpoint post office line today, trying desperately to block out the incessant cries of five babies, I thought, condoms are so cheap! And sometimes they're free, too -- maybe those giveaways aren't such bullshit after all.

Beach House Grabs Pitchfork's 'Best New Music' Title And More!

You’ve probably see Baltimore duo Beach House just about everywhere this week. That’s because the band released its second full-length Devotion on Tuesday. To add to that excitement, the band also grabbed the coveted ‘Best New Music’ title from Pitchfork this week, landed Rolling Stone’s “Breaking” feature, enjoyed ‘Song of the Day’ status on NPR, and were Paste Magazine’s ‘Band of the Week’.

Beach House uploaded its new video for “Heart Of Chambers” to the web last night. Pitchfork, Stereogum, and others ran the video the second it hit the web, but if you haven’t seen it go HERE and check it out. Alistair Legrand, brother to band member Victoria, directed the video.

The band launched its US tour with The Papercuts last night in its hometown of Baltimore. Popular blogs and local hotspots will be giving away tickets and a number of other special prizes leading up to the shows. The fine folks over at Pitchfork gave their two cents on Luke Temple's Snowbeast this past Friday-- giving the album a whopping 7.4 out of a total 10 points!

Here's some of what they had to say:

"a variety of romanticized and alienated imagery that's snatched straight from a time when squares were there to be looked at and made strange... Temple's various gifts amplify each other." - Pitchfork (7.4)

Alternative Press Gives Edison Glass Four Stars

We've been counting down the days until Edison Glass releases its latest album Time Is Fiction for a while now. And we're not the only ones. Alternative Press Magazine has a fantastic review of the album hitting stands on Tuesday-- the very same day that the record hits stores.

Here's a first look at their review:

“An angular post-punk foursome from Long Island, New York, doing some seriously creative shit on their new album...A more straightforward Circa Survive with Cove Reber singing (seriously, download “Without A Sound” if you don’t believe us). Really solid. We’re pretty embarrassed it’s taken us five full lengths to take notice of this band, but we promise we won’t ignore them now.” - Alternative Press (4/5 Stars)

To celebrate the album release, Edison Glass will be playing a very special show at Looney Tunes in West Babylon, NY on Tuesday.

Tuesday, February 5th @ Looney Tunes

Jukebox the Ghost sold out CD release show!

Following a slew of show previews about Jukebox the Ghost's CD release show in Washington DC, the band had a very successful SOLD OUT show at Black Cat on Saturday. A few words about the show...

"Fortunately for the 700+ people crammed into the Black Cat, Jukebox the Ghost lived up to their reputation as one of the best new bands in the District and put on the performance of their lives." - DCist

"...one of the best CD release parties ever." - Instrumental Analysis

"Blissed-out references, from a godlike observation that the world's a giant ant farm waiting to be blitzed to the knottiness of relationships, form a jauntily delirious stream of consciousness." - Read Express

"...everyone breaks out in big grins, grown (normally quite sarcastic) men write endearingly gushing reviews, heads bobbing and fingers snapping along the way." - Brightest Young Things

Keep an eye out for these guys around their string of upcoming tour dates!

The Apples in stereo to release Electronic Projects for Musicians

The Apples in stereo to release Electronic Projects for Musicians
B-sides & rarities Collection out 4/1/08

Fresh off New Magnetic Wonder, which Rolling Stone named one of the Top 50 Albums of 2007 and about which SPIN Magazine said, “New Magnetic Wonder couldn’t be brighter if it had been performed on the sun. 4 stars,” The Apples in Stereo are now releasing a long-awaited b-sides and rarities compilation, Electronic Projects for Musicians (Simian / Yep Roc / Elephant 6). Named after a 1980 how-to manual by Craig Anderton, the album can be seen as the Apples’ follow-up to the popular 1996 compilation Science Faire and completes a chapter in the artistic arc of one of indie rock’s most influential bands.

Issuing an electronic project of his own to Apples fans, Schneider uploaded the individual uncompressed tracks of last year’s single “Can You Feel It?” to the Yep Roc website so that anyone could create their own unique remix; the band is picking the best among them to be featured as an exclusive bonus track available for the digital release of the album.

2007 was a watershed year for The Apples having been personally selected to contribute a remix to the Yoko Ono track "No One Can See Me Like You Do" for the compilation "Yes, I'm a Witch" alongside other notables Jason Pierce, Hank Shocklee, Peaches, Cat Power, DJ Spooky, Craig Armstrong and The Flaming Lips. The band also toured Taiwan and across North America and Europe to sold out crowds.

Pitchfork Reviews Two Slow Six Albums At Once!

What can be better for an indie rocker’s career right now than a positive Pitchfork review? TWO positive Pitchfork reviews.

Pitchforkmedia.com recently bestowed the Brooklyn, NY neo-indie-avant garde outfit Slow Six with a 7.3 review for 2004’s Private Times In Public Places, and coupled it with a 7.1 review of this year’s Nor’Easter. Check it out HERE.

For much of Slow Six’s career, they’ve seen music writers have a hard time trying to define the band or relegate them to one static genre. Are they neo-classical or post-rock? Whatever it is, it’s completely brilliant and moving— in this case, genre just doesn’t matter. Fortunately, the New York Times, Time Out New York, and now Pitchfork have agreed that it doesn’t really matter exactly what kind of music these guys are playing... It’s just really good!

Slow Six has one more US show on the books before they head to Canada for a string of dates. Be sure to check out their latest, Nor’Easter, if you haven’t already!

Here’s what other people have said about Slow Six:

“Flecked with white-heat urgency” – The New York Times

“A thing of rare, fragile beauty” – Time Out New York

“A majestic respite from Lower-East Side antics” – Flavorpill

Slow Six On Tour:

02/29 New York, NY Calvary Church
03/07 Montreal, QUE Under The Snow Festival @ Casa Del Popolo
03/08 London, ONT The London Music Club
03/09 Toronto, ONT Wavelength Music Series at Sneaky Dee’s

Gogol Bordello Rocked Us Into The New Year!

What could be a better way to ring in the new year than to dance my way through a set by New York via Ukraine's Gogol Bordello. Their unique mixture of musics includes nods to punk rock (Eugene is evidently a huge Birthday Party fan), politics (socialism rules their iconography), roots (Gypsy / Klezmer / Celtic) and hip hop (MC included). I always describe them as the Ukrainian Pogues led by Iggy Pop.

I've been fortunate to see them a dozen times over the years and even though the venue was huge this time around - The Bowery Presents at Terminal 5 - they still came off like they were sincerely leading a musical party / revolution - no matter the size of the stage!

For those of you that haven't been to Terminal 5, its not bad. I thought the sound was great; good sightlines; crew was friendly. Kudos to The Bowery Presents for the perfect start to 2008!

Luke Temple

Luke is getting press, check it out!

"Mr. Temple isn't part of any particular school -- not even that all-purpose new songwriters' catchall, freak-folk -- and his private world is fascinating." - Jon Pareles, New York Times

"Temple's dreamscape lyrics, playful instrumentation and warm, ethereal tenor deftly nudge the would-be boundaries of the singer-songwriter tag." - Paste

"Luke Temple raises impossible expectations for his second LP by opening Snowbeast with one of 2007's best songs, "Saturday People,"' - The A.V. Club (A -)
